Enjoy a 7-day trek to the top of Kilimanjaro via the Machame path with a group of knowledgeable guides and neighborhood porters from Kili to savanna safari club.
One of the best routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro is the Machame route, also known as the “Whisky Route,” as it is the best for acclimatization and enables climbers to “walk high and sleep low” while also having one of the greatest summit success rates of all the routes. In order to have your tent ready when you arrive, along with a warm beverage made by our team chef, we make sure that our porter team gets to the designated campsites early. Contact us so that we can talk about your goals for your Kilimanjaro climbing journey. We would be delighted to assist you in climbing the highest peak in Africa. We also have additional Kilimanjaro ascent paths, including the Marangu, Lemosho, and Rongai routes.
The six days Machame variation is a difficult route. In particular, day four combined with day five makes for a very hard schedule. Day four is a full day of hiking from Barranco to Barafu. Then after dinner and a partial night’s sleep, the very long and strenuous summit day begins around midnight. The 6 days Machame route requires 19-24 hours of demanding walking, at extremely high elevation, with only 4-6 hours of sleep at Machame.
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a scenic drive from Moshi to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate, taking approximately 50 minutes. Along the way, you will pass through the village of Machame, located on the lower slopes of the mountain. After registration at the gate, the trek officially begins as you enter the lush rainforest zone on a winding trail that steadily climbs along a ridge.
The lower sections of the trail can often be muddy and slippery, especially after rainfall, making gaiters and trekking poles highly recommended. Surrounded by towering trees, vibrant vegetation, and the sounds of the rainforest, you will gradually ascend toward Machame Camp, where you will spend your first night on the mountain.
Elevation: 5,400ft to 9,400ft
Distance: 11 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest
After breakfast, you will leave the lush rainforest behind and continue along an ascending trail into the moorland zone. The route crosses a small valley before climbing a steep rocky ridge covered with giant heather and other high-altitude vegetation. As the landscape gradually opens up, you will begin to experience breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s dramatic terrain.
The trail continues westward into a river gorge before leading to Shira Camp, located on the expansive Shira Plateau. Upon arrival, you will have time to rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the next stage of your climb while taking in the stunning mountain scenery.
Elevation: 9,400ft to 12,500ft
Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Today’s trek is an important acclimatization day as you continue from the Shira Plateau eastward along a ridge, passing the junction leading toward Kibo Peak. The landscape gradually changes into a dramatic semi-desert environment with sparse vegetation and stunning volcanic scenery surrounding the trail.
As the hike progresses, the route turns southeast toward the impressive Lava Tower, famously known as the “Shark’s Tooth.” This high-altitude section provides an excellent opportunity for your body to adapt to the thinner air. Shortly after Lava Tower, you will pass the second junction leading toward Arrow Glacier at approximately 16,000ft before descending into the beautiful Barranco Valley.
You will arrive at Barranco Camp, nestled beneath the towering Barranco Wall, where you can rest, enjoy dinner, and spend the night. Although the day ends at a similar elevation to where it began, this climb-high, sleep-low strategy is essential for proper acclimatization and greatly improves your chances of reaching the summit successfully.
Elevation: 12,500ft to 13,000ft
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Semi Desert
After breakfast, the trek begins with a climb up the steep and iconic Barranco Wall, rewarding you with spectacular views of the surrounding glaciers and valleys. From the top of the ridge, the trail descends into the Karanga Valley before continuing through the alpine desert landscape toward Barafu Camp.
Along the way, you will join the junction connecting to the Mweka Trail as the terrain becomes increasingly rugged and exposed. This section of the climb forms part of Kilimanjaro’s Southern Circuit, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the summit from multiple angles.
Upon arrival at Barafu Hut, you will have time to rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare mentally and physically for the summit attempt later that night. From this high-altitude camp, the magnificent peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo can be clearly seen rising above the mountain landscape.
Elevation: 13,000ft to 15,000ft
Distance: 9 km
Hiking Time: 8–10 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Very early in the morning, typically between midnight and 2am, you begin your final push toward the summit. The climb takes you between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers as you ascend steadily in a northwesterly direction through steep, loose scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim. This section is the most mentally and physically demanding part of the entire trek due to the altitude and challenging terrain.
At Stella Point (18,600ft), you will take a short rest and, weather permitting, witness one of the most breathtaking sunrises you will ever experience. From here, the final stretch to Uhuru Peak is approximately one hour, often crossing patches of snow as you approach the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa.
After celebrating your achievement at the summit, you begin a long descent back down the mountain. You will pass through Barafu Camp for a brief lunch stop before continuing to Mweka Camp. The descent is steep and consists of loose gravel, so gaiters and trekking poles are highly recommended for stability and comfort.
Mweka Camp is located in the upper forest zone, where mist or light rain is common in the late afternoon. Here, you will enjoy your final dinner on the mountain and rest after an unforgettable summit day.
Elevation: 15,300ft to 19,345ft (then down to 10,000ft)
Ascent Distance: 5 km
Descent Distance: 12 km
Hiking Time: 7–8 hours ascent / 4–6 hours descent
Habitat: Arctic
After breakfast, you begin your final descent from Mweka Camp, making your way down through the lush rainforest toward Mweka Park Gate. This section of the trail is often wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles are highly recommended for stability and comfort. As you lose elevation, the air becomes warmer and thicker, and lighter clothing such as shorts and t-shirts is usually sufficient, though it’s wise to keep rain gear and warmer layers close at hand.
Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, you will receive your summit certificates, marking the successful completion of your Kilimanjaro climb. From the gate, the trail continues for approximately one more hour down to Mweka Village, where your journey transitions from mountain wilderness back to civilization.
At Mweka Village, a vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi, bringing your unforgettable adventure to a close.
Elevation: 10,000ft to 5,400ft
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest
